About Us
West Berkshire and Newbury Liberal Democrats is the local party for most of the West Berkshire district covering the Newbury parliamentary constituency, and part of the Reading West and Mid Berkshire parliamentary constituency. Reading West and Mid Berkshire constituency also falls partly in Reading Borough and so it shared with Reading local party. The local authority for the West Berkshire area is West Berkshire Council, also within our area, the town councils of Newbury and Thatcham are run on political lines.
In the General Election of May 2024, the Newbury constituency was won for the Liberal Democrats by Lee Dillon with a 40.1% vote share.
In May 2023, the Liberal Democrats won control of West Berkshire Council and retained control of both Newbury and Thatcham Town Councils. West Berkshire Council is composed of 28 Lib Dems, 11 Conservative, 2 Green, 1 Labour, and 1 Independent. (former Lib Dem).
The Local Party is managed by an Executive Committee, which is elected at the AGM in October or November. We operate in a Branch structure. You automatically become a member of the branch you live in. The Branches organize social events, have branch meetings and support campaigning within their areas. The Newbury (Newbury Vales and Downs covering the west) and Thatcham (East Branch) branches are responsible for selecting candidates for elections for their Town Councils.
