Why I’m Calling for Energy Bills to Be Frozen This Winter
This January, energy bills are set to rise yet again. Ofgem has announced that the price cap will increase to £1,738 a year. For households already stretched to their limits, this news will come as a devastating blow.
I’ve spoken to so many people across Newbury who are deeply worried about how they will cope this winter. Some are already making impossible choices between heating and eating. For our pensioners, the situation is even worse – higher bills combined with cuts to Winter Fuel Payments mean many will struggle to keep warm during the coldest months.
This isn’t just unfair; it’s unacceptable.
The government has repeatedly promised to bring down energy bills. It’s time for them to live up to those promises. That’s why I’m calling for the upcoming energy price rise to be cancelled and for Winter Fuel Payments to be reinstated. Families and pensioners in Newbury, and across the country, deserve better than to face another winter of worry and cold homes.
Help with Energy Costs: What You Need to Know
If you’re struggling with your energy bills, there are several support schemes that might be available to you.
- Warm Home Discount: A one-off £150 discount on your energy bills for those on certain benefits or low incomes.
- Cold Weather Payments: £25 for every seven-day period of freezing weather (below 0°C) if you’re on Pension Credit or other qualifying benefits.
Winter Fuel Payments: Help with heating costs for those born before 26 September 1957.
There are also energy efficiency grants, like the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), to help with home improvements such as insulation, making your home warmer, and your energy bills lower.
West Berkshire Council may be able to provide additional help through the Household Support Fund, which has been extended until April 2025 to support those most in need.
Are You Missing Out on Support?
Shockingly, over 800,000 eligible pensioners are not claiming Pension Credit—a vital source of support for those on low incomes. Pension Credit not only helps with living costs but also unlocks access to other benefits like the Warm Home Discount and Cold Weather Payments.
I urge everyone in Newbury and West Berkshire to check what support they might be entitled to. It only takes 10 minutes to check, and it could make a real difference this winter.
