Lee Dillon MP seeks assurances over future of Hungerford Post Office services

Many residents will be aware of recent uncertainty surrounding the future of the Hungerford Post Office, following news that the current operator, TG Jones, is undergoing a Restructuring Plan. Understandably, this has raised concerns about what it means for local postal and banking services.

What has been announced?

TG Jones has informed the Post Office that changes to their business may affect the operation of the Hungerford branch. While this does not mean a closure has been decided, it does create uncertainty about the long‑term arrangements for the service.

As a small rural community, Hungerford residents rely heavily on the services provided by the Post Office, including everyday banking and cash withdrawals, parcel delivery and bill payments.

It is important to highlight that no decision has been made to close the branch.

The Post Office has confirmed that services remain open as normal, and they are actively preparing contingency plans to ensure continuity should any change to the operator occur.

I have been working closely with the Post Office to seek clarity on the next steps.

I have formally written to Post Office Ltd requesting further information surrounding the decision-making timetable, the criteria used to select a new branch operator, and details of the next stages of the restructuring process.

I have made clear that Hungerford must not be left without a Post Office and that continuity of service is essential for residents and local businesses.

This issue has also been raised in Parliament. Peter Swallow MP today asked the Business Secretary about the situation affecting both Morrisons‑hosted branches (like the one in Thatcham town centre) and TG Jones‑operated sites, ensuring national attention is focused on the need to protect local Post Office services.

I will continue to work closely with the Post Office and will keep residents updated as soon as further information becomes available.
