Fighting for Pensioners Against Fuel Payment Cuts
On Tuesday, 10th September 2024, I voted against the Labour Government's damaging decision to cut the Winter Fuel Payment. Despite strong opposition from many of us, the Government pushed the vote through with a majority of 120, winning by 348 votes to 228.
This cut means that from this autumn, pensioners who aren’t receiving Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will lose their Winter Fuel Payment, which was worth between £100 and £300 a year. The Government claims it needs to make these cuts due to a budget shortfall, but I believe this decision will hurt many pensioners already struggling with the rising cost of living.
I proudly opposed this cut and stood up for the many pensioners in Newbury who now face an even tougher winter. This Government’s actions are putting vulnerable people at risk. As Liberal Democrats, we will keep fighting to reverse this damaging decision, standing up for the real changes that people need.
Support Still Available for Pensioners
Although the Winter Fuel Payment has been cut for many, there are currently some other support options available to help pensioners manage energy costs:
- Pension Credit: This is crucial for pensioners on low incomes, providing extra money for living costs. If you qualify, you may also be eligible for additional benefits like the Cold Weather Payment and the Warm Home Discount.
- Warm Home Discount: A one-off payment of £150 is available to those on certain benefits or low incomes, which is automatically deducted from energy bills.
- Cold Weather Payment: For every seven-day period of very cold weather (below 0°C), you can receive a £25 payment if you’re on Pension Credit or other qualifying benefits.
- Energy Efficiency Grants: Government schemes like the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) provide grants for home improvements, such as insulation, to make homes more energy-efficient and reduce heating costs.
There’s also additional help available from local councils through the Household Support Fund, which has been extended until April 2025. This fund helps those most in need with daily essentials, including energy bills.
Make Sure You're Getting What You’re Entitled To
Shockingly, more than 800,000 pensioners who are eligible for Pension Credit are not claiming it. I urge every pensioner to check whether they qualify. Not only does Pension Credit help with day-to-day costs, but it often unlocks access to other valuable support.
I encourage all pensioners to use this quick 10-minute benefits checker to ensure they’re not missing out on the financial help they deserve. You can use the MoneySavingExpert Benefits Calculator to check your eligibility.
