Cllr Dr Tony Vickers, the Liberal Democrat Group on West Berkshire Council's Spokesperson for Planning, has written an open letter to Sport England regarding the Faraday Road football ground, setting our the Liberal Democrats' concerns about the proposed move to Monks Lane.
Cllr Vickers said:
"My colleagues in the Opposition – and here I believe I speak for the Green Party Group as well – feel bound to say that we do not share the aspirations of the ruling Group to relocate Newbury’s main football facilities from Faraday Road to Monks Lane. Nor do we share their confidence that the timeline set out by Cllr Doherty can be achieved. For a start, if demolition were to begin on site in August it would be in breach of planning.
The demolition could – and in our opinion should – be delayed until an application for the redevelopment of the whole of the London Road Industrial Estate (LRIE) has been granted outline planning consent and any pre-start planning conditions have been discharged. It is highly optimistic to assume that this can be achieved before the middle of 2023, by which time all-out local elections could well produce a new Administration of the Council – and therefore also a new Local Planning Authority – whose policies as regards LRIE and football facilities would be entirely different.
The Opposition parties are unanimous in wanting to see football resume at Faraday Road with minimum additional delay, at least on a temporary basis while the LRIE development plans are progressed."
