Response to Leisure Strategy

The Liberal Democrat Group on West Berkshire Council have announced their response to West Berkshire Council's Leisure Strategy.

Shadow Portfolio Holder for Education, Young People and Culture Erik Pattenden said:

"An ambitious and wide-reaching leisure provision will play a significant part in the COVID recovery phase and life thereafter, so we welcome the presentation of this draft strategy and the opportunity to provide feedback. It does include some good aspects to this strategy, and unusually for a strategy from the current West Berks Council administration, even includes a number of specific targets and delivery focuses, so it is gratifying that our frequent criticism of recent strategy documents has finally been acted upon.

However, we still have a number of concerns. We would liked to have seen far more attention given to informal leisure activities, in the same level of detail given to formal ones, and with that we would like to have seen a consideration of increased public rights of way, as we know that access to open space can bring great benefits to both physical and mental health.

Above all, the report again highlights the long term inequalities and poverty that exist in areas within Greenham, Thatcham North and others. This was identified in the Council Strategy 2019-2023, but still persists to the shame of the administration."
