Throughout the recent lockdowns, the Liberal Democrat run Newbury Town Council worked with local residents, businesses and others to ensure that our high street could remain safe and accessible for all who use it, even in a time when social distancing was necessary.
During the period of enforced pedestrianisation of Northbrook Street we Liberal Democrats learned a lot, and believe that there were a number of key benefits. In particular, we believe that it made the experience of our town centre better, making Newbury a safer, greener and more attractive place to visit, work and live.
That’s why we’re calling on West Berkshire Council to urgently experiment with permanent pedestrianisation of Northbrook Street (10am-midnight) and the Market Place (24 hours).
We know through consulting with residents and businesses that these proposals have wide-ranging support; now it’s time for action.
