The West Berkshire and Newbury Liberal Democrats have launched the “Shop Local” pledge, urging local residents to shop locally in order to help businesses in West Berkshire recover from lockdown and protect local jobs. You can take the pledge here.
Across the West Berkshire area, hundreds of small independent shops, cafés and other businesses are beginning to re-open following the coronavirus lockdown. These businesses help make our local community what it is, and play a crucial role in our local economy.
Lockdown has hit these local businesses hard, and for some their very existence may now be under threat. Losing these businesses would be detrimental to the soul of our town, and could cost hundreds of local jobs.
As lockdown eases, the West Berkshire and Newbury Liberal Democrats are pledging to shop local, knowing that every penny we spend in our local shops and businesses over the next few months will help them to survive, and protect local jobs as they do so.
Martin Colston, the Liberal Democrat leader of Newbury Town Council said:
“Our local businesses are a key part of what makes Newbury unique, and many of them have really suffered during lockdown. We all need them to survive and prosper so we can enjoy what they offer over the coming months and years. They rely on all of us and we can all help by pledging to shop locally in Newbury wherever possible, and, better still, go out of our way to shop locally. Please please please support your local shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes and especially those that are independents as they need our support the most. Shop local to keep Newbury a town we can all be proud of.”
David Lister, the Liberal Democrat leader of Thatcham Town Council said:
"It's great news that most of the town is reopening and adhering to the social distancing guidelines. We know how difficult it has been for our businesses and are incredibly grateful for those that supported our community through the most difficult periods of lockdown, adapting their business to provide take-aways and food deliveries. More than ever our town centre, retailers and shops, now need your support. Our eating establishments are open and offer takeaways, our Friday market is operating as usual with a variety of fresh food, flowers, and pet food, and shops are open with measures in place to keep you safe.
On behalf of all my fellow Thatcham Town Councillors we are delighted to welcome you back. "
Lee Dillon, Parliamentary Spokesperson and Leader of the West Berkshire Council Liberal Democrat Group said:
“West Berkshire is lucky to have Towns and villages offering high street names and independent traders. We need to ensure the government advice is more timely when changes come so business has time to plan but we also need to make sure our Council is not just reactive to ideas from traders but that they are more proactive in using all their resources to make sure our high streets can thrive moving forward.”
